Participation in the both the canasta club and canasta classes is free and open to all members of the general public.
Canasta was developed in Montevideo, Uruguay in 1939 and became extremely popular in some parts of South America before being introduced to the United States in 1948. It is played with two decks of cards and is the only member of the rummy family of card games that is played with a partner.
