Canasta

The Springfield Free Public Library will host a Monday evening canasta club, beginning November 6. 2017 and continuing through May of 2018 as long as there is sufficient interest. The club will meet from 6:30 to 8:00 PM. The intention of the club is bring together people who already know how to play canasta and who are looking for others interested in playing on a regular basis. The library will provide the space and the card tables, but participants will need to bring their own decks of cards.

People who do not know how to play canasta but who are interested in learning will be able to attend classes at the library from 6:30 to 8:00 PM on Monday evenings, beginning on June 18. Participation in the both the canasta club and canasta classes is free and open to all members of the general public.

Canasta was developed in Montevideo, Uruguay in 1939 and became extremely popular in some parts of South America before being introduced to the United States in 1948. It is played with two decks of cards and is the only member of the rummy family of card games that is played with a partner.
